A day in the life

As the Senior Underwriter at ManyPets, your responsibilities include   drafting policy wordings and other regulatory documentation, ensuring they adhere to the insurance principles, but all clear, concise and in plain English.

You’ll coordinate the Product Oversight and Governance committees with our partner insurers, taking a tight control on product governance, maintaining an excellent relationship with key external stakeholders for underwriting.

As a point of call for underwriting queries, you’ll respond on operational and claim referrals, ensuring they are resolved within SLAs. 

You’ll collaborate with cross-functional teams including Claims, Operations, Marketing, Compliance and Legal, to contribute to delivering a high-quality, customer-focused insurance offering whilst maintaining and representing the underwriting requirements of the Underwriting team.

You’ll be involved in tracking the underwriting performance and our footprint to support profitable growth by identifying product changes, rating improvements and risk appetite/quotability improvements.

Additionally, you'll help the wider Underwriting team deliver actionable insight across the business and achieve its objectives.  This includes liaising with compliance and legal teams to identify the legal and regulatory impacts of changes, ensuring adequate controls and monitoring of governance and risk controls.

Your responsibilities

  • Support the Underwriting Director in the oversight of the UK pet insurance portfolio.
  • Drafting and review of policy wordings and product documentation making sure that it’s in plain English, clear and concise – so everyone can understand the content.
  • Manage our internal product oversight and ensure appropriate product maintenance.
  • Ensure technical queries are dealt with in agreed timeframes, including resolving operations and claims product underwriting queries.
  • Monitor our underwriting footprint (or paw print) ensuring business operates and complies consistently with our different insurance products.
  • Monitor underwriting performance and support the delivery of loss ratio objectives.
  • Assist in the development and refinement of underwriting rules.
  • Review and contribute to the maintenance of underwriting process guides, ensuring best practice and knowledge sharing across the team.
  • Provide input to improve underwriting processes and procedures.
  • Work closely with the underwriting team and wider stakeholders to ensure regulatory and underwriting requirements are met.
  • Liaise with our internal Compliance team to identify the impact of legal and regulatory changes.
  • Provide technical support and mentoring to junior underwriters.
  • Support the coordination of underwriting committee inputs and governance where required.
  • Build strong working relationships with internal stakeholders and partner insurers.

Your skills and experience

  • You’re an experienced Underwriter or Senior Underwriter with a few years of underwriting experience already. Preferably with pet insurance experience.
  • You have experience in writing and developing personal lines policy wordings, preferably in pet insurance.
  • You’ll be familiar with product governance requirements and have experience of applying this to pet insurance products.
  • We value veterinary healthcare experience, and you’ll bring an understanding of pet insurance products and insurance commercials.
  • You’ll have experience of the regulatory responsibilities of insurance business and key obligations that need to be met within a regulated environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to influence and educate stakeholders across the business.
  • Highly organised, proactive, and detail-oriented with a focus on continuous improvement.

The interview process

This position has a two-step interview process, which will be held via Zoom.

  • Stage 1 – an informal 45-minute meeting with our People team. We’ll explain more about the role and how your experience matches up with what we need.
  • Stage 2 – you’ll meet our Underwriting Director and one of the managers in the team. This will be a longer interview up to an hour and we’ll ask you some competency questions.

Ways of working

On a typical day you’ll be working from a laptop with a screen, mouse, keyboard, and headset.  You’ll be meeting your colleagues on Zoom and keeping in touch regularly via email and Slack too – we’d expect you to be using your computer for around seven hours a day.  We’d ask that you have a distraction-free work area and a reliable internet connection with a speed of 25Mbps so you can work effectively.  We’ll make sure you have the right home set-up that supports you in the role by providing best-in-class technology, money towards a desk, and vision support.
