About the Opportunity
It's been a fast growth trajectory since our launch in the USA in March 2021 - and our business model is undergoing exciting change. We’ve built on our remarkable growth trajectory by acquiring our own US-based, insurance carrier. By acquiring our own carrier alongside our existing brokerage business, we will be able to provide best-in-breed cover for our customers and have more flexibility in delivering product innovation.
Given these plans, we’re now looking for a motivated and experienced Actuarial Analyst to help us manage the underwriting performance of our US business. In this role, you’ll take the lead on assessing claims experience and what it means for our business going forward in terms of pricing and product design. You will have oversight of the performance of business underwritten by our existing insurance partners as well as for our new venture: Many Insurance Company – a Delaware incorporated insurance carrier. You’ll bring experience of actuarial techniques and will be an effective relationship builder and communicator to ensure you work effectively with our US and Global teams to bring timely and actionable insight.
You will report directly to our CEO of the Carrier in the USA and have a strong relationship with our Group Chief Actuary to ensure that we maximise the value of our data and insights from across all our businesses. By joining us at this stage in our journey, you'll have plenty of scope to grow with us - plus build truly meaningful relationships with a smorgasbord of stakeholders across our growing teams including our US CEO and our Group CFO.
Your Focus
- Lead our reserving activities for the US business to determine the ultimate loss ratio for historic periods, employing appropriate actuarial methods and maximising the use of our data assets.
- Ensure methodologies and assumptions are appropriate and utilise industry insight and market benchmarking to ensure projections are as accurate as possible.
- Lead the engagement with external actuarial advisors, reviewing and challenging their analysis as appropriate.
- Support pricing analysis to help determine recommended actions and supporting the rate filing process to ensure that proposed changes achieve regulatory approval on a timely basis and are effectively implemented.
- Communicating results effectively to realise business gains from valuable insight.
- Ensure quality and accuracy in reserving output and recognising (and acting) on trends seen within pet insurance.
- Build a strong relationship with our underwriting partners to deliver an accurate assessment of our performance ensuring high levels of trust and mutual success.
- Support technical enhancement to our processes with an opportunity to advance the use of open-source software and new techniques.
- Deliver a transparent reporting and management information and partnering with the team to deliver information for our Board, investor packs and monthly finance meetings.
- Provide input into the scope and breadth of our analytics and diagnostic tools.
- Support the development of enhanced claims analytics, frequency/severity and peril analysis and support tech initiatives around the business, including claims automation and fraud detection.

What We’re Looking For
- You’ll be a part-qualified actuary, having passed over 4 exams, and you understand the key actuarial principles behind pricing and reserving.
- You have some commercial experience in an actuarial or data science role, preferably direct or aggregator-led personal lines insurance. You may be in your first job after graduating and be looking for your next dream opportunity.
- You are up to date with technical developments in the insurance industry and best practice in actuarial methods.
- Owing to the nature of the role, we will need you to have a degree-level qualification (or equivalent) in Mathematics, Science, Engineering, or a related degree.
- You'll know Excel, and any experience in ResQ and SQL would be a big plus.
- Ideally, you will bring an understanding of the dynamics of personal lines insurance (pet insurance experience an advantage, but not essential!)
- You'll be a compelling presenter with clear written and verbal communication. You'll know how to present and summarise information to diverse audiences to take them with you on the journey.
- You'll know how to balance delivery in a local market, while working as part of a broader global team and brand.

We work from home and our company offices in the UK, so we've created our "Making Work, Work" guide which explains it all. On a typical day you’ll be working from a laptop with a screen, mouse, keyboard, and headset. You’ll be meeting your colleagues on Zoom and keeping in touch regularly via email and Slack too – we’d expect you to be using your computer for around seven hours a day. We’d ask that you have a distraction-free work area and a reliable internet connection with a speed of 25Mbps so you can work effectively. We’ll make sure you have the right home set-up that supports you in the role by providing best-in-class technology, money towards a desk, and vision support.
